I am Strong

Affirm Yourself

If you are friends with me on Facebook, you’ve seen that I’ve recently began applying Marie Kondo’s method for tidying at my house.  Are you familiar with this very spectacular woman?  If you aren’t, check out her 2 books here:

spark joy

Her books guide you through an intense tidying process that encourages you to evaluate which of your belongings “spark joy”.  Keep what does, discard what doesn’t.  Simple, right? Hehe…be prepared for a surprisingly emotional journey through your stuff.

You begin with your clothing.  You put 100% of all apparel owned into a pile then sort through it deciding what actually serves a positive purpose in your life.  My pile looked like this:

And if I’m being totally honest, there was more on the floor that didn’t fit in the square frame of my phone camera.

As I went through the process it became very clear that 97% of my clothing did not make me feel warm and fuzzy.  As that realization blanketed my body I thought that this would be the perfect time to implement a clothing campaign that would spark joy for me and everyone I know.  Hence the birth of the Positive Affirmation line of Strong Calm Sexy tees & tanks!

Cuter than a post-it note!

If you’ve done the DOIT, you know that I love affirmations and want you to leave positive post-it notes around the house to remind yourself how wonderful you are.  These shirts are one step above that because you’ll be taking that message with you “wear-ever” you go (see what I did there?)!

I am so excited to present the first release:

I AM STRONG is one of the most powerful things you can say about yourself.  It has multi-faceted meanings and believe me when I say, we’ve all had our strength tested in every area.  Think about the ways that this statement is true to you and allow this tank to remind you the you ARE INDEED STRONG!

My Diet is Better Than Yours: Spoiler Alert

So, when I said I was going to follow this show, little did I know it was only 3 episodes long.  This is about the perfect length of a TV Series season for my ADD/Impatient self.  Did anyone else watch?  If you’re going to but you’re months behind on your DVR…then read no further!  But if you’re ready to know the result…drumrolll, please…

The Superfood Swap Diet!

Hey! This was my first choice!  I was actually a little surprised that the Wild Diet didn’t take it.  That guy seemed to be melting away.  But, I like this plan better than the others for overall health and well being.  I also thought the trainer, Dawn, was relatable and build a great relationship with her contestant.  All of the contestants did great.  One gal left early because she was struggling emotionally with the journey.  I felt for her.  I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Anyhow, it was a fun show with great options for changing your lifestyle.  Plenty of reality TV drama included, but short, sweet and to the point.

If you had to pick one, which would it be?

An Overnight Sensation

They’re magically delicious!

I’ve recently had a handful of people ask me for an overnight oats recipe.  Have you heard of this breakfast phenomena?  Overnight oats are a hearty and filling way to start the day.  There are countless ways to dress them up and various ways to make them.  With endless options to customize your oats, there is a necessary base that includes the following. Quantities are for a 1 serving portion.

overnight oats

Base Ingredients

  1. 1/3 cup whole rolled oats
  2. 2 TBSP Chia Seeds
  3. 1 cup of your own milk preference.  Almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, dairy, hemp milk, flax milk, etc.

These are the essential ingredients.  The chia seeds are what help glue the dish together.  Do not leave this out.  If you don’t have chia seeds you could potentially use milled flaxseeds as they both plump up in liquid.

The Fun Part

You can get as crazy as you want with the remaining ingredients, but just in case too much freedom panics you, here are my favorite combinations:

Banana & Nuts:

Take the 3 base ingredients and add:

4 oz plain greek or skyr yogurt

1 tsp maple syrup

Mix those ingredients together in a container with a lid and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, remove from fridge and stir.  You may need to splash in a tiny bit more milk in it to loosen it up a little.  Then add the following toppings:

2 TBSP chopped almonds

1/2 sliced banana

cinnamon to taste

After School Special

The base ingredients, plus:

4 oz vanilla skyr yogurt

1 TBSP peanut butter

Mix the above ingredients together and refrigerate overnight. In the morning add the following:

A splash more liquid as needed.

1 cup raspberries or blueberries

Strawberries and Cream

The base ingredients (i recommend coconut milk on this one), plus:

Siggi’s Skyr yogurt (coconut flavor) 5.3 oz container

1 TBSP unsweetened coconut flakes

Mix together and refrigerate overnight.

The following morning add 6-8 sliced strawberries (and more liquid if necessary).

Do you have your own custom creation?

If you’ve mastered the art of overnight oats, let me know your favorite combination.

Invest in Yourself

Powerball Mania

The clock is ticking.  You’ve got one more day to get your tickets and collect your lucky charms before you watch that glorified leaf blower spit out the rubber balls that will seal your fate.  Are you feeling lucky?

Let’s pretend for a minute that you are the winning ticket holder.  No harm in that, right?  What would you do with the money?   Would you be conservative even if you didn’t need to be?  Would you be charitable?  Would you quit your job?  Would you move to a new house or different location?

I asked my daughter what she’d do if we won the lottery (which is unlikely as I haven’t bought any tickets 😉 and she said she’d continue to pursue her current plan (she wants to be a cosmetologist), but use the money to educate herself even further and start her own salon.  Whether or not that is actually how that scenario would play out is completely uncertain, but as I was considering the same thing myself (what I would do), I started taking a few notes.  Heck, you know me.  I can’t just take a few notes.  I wrote up an entire plan. It was lovely to realize that my plan, if I had a billion dollars, is very parallel to my plan with…significantly less than a billion dollars.  Either way, I am sticking to my plan, but the extra money would certainly allow that plan to be accelerated and pursued on a larger scale.

Think about what you’d do.  Aside from the family and friends you’d share it with (because of course we’d all share, right?) Do you have a list of dreams you’d follow?  Think about that list.  Even write it out.  Take a look at it.  Is there anything you could pursue without winning the lottery?  Can you dive in and invest time and a more modest plan that would help you reach the same end goal?  This is a great way to discover if you’ve really found your passion.  It’s kind of like answering that question: What would you do if you could not fail?  Only in this scenario, it’s what would you do if you had unlimited resources.

All “lifelong goals” aside?  Just for fun: What would your first huge purchase be?  Needs some inspiration?  Check out these big ticket items that are for sale and up for grabs to the next big Powerball winner:

The Playboy Mansion

playboy mansion

In case you haven’t heard, it’s for sale at the bargain price of $200,000,000.  Added bonus, you won’t be lonely because this fancy pad comes with a roomie.  The lucky buyer of the estate must comply with one quid pro quo.  Mr. Heffner will continue to reside in the property for the rest of his life, with you.

The Fastest Car in the World

With all that extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, you can burn rubber trying to spend it.  This Bugatti will set you back $3.4 million dollars (pennies in a bucket for you) and you can feel the wind in your hair at a whipping 254 MPH.

A Huge Diamond

Start doing your wrist curls now.  You’ll be needing all of your strength to sport this 12 carat diamond.  You’ll also need to call the current owner and your fellow billionaire friend as he just paid a whopping $48.4 million to purchase this blue diamond for his 7 year old daughter.

Here is the Blue Diamond I got when I was 7:

Not a billionaire?  You can pick up the Blue Diamond My Little Pony for $6 😉

My Diet is Better Than Yours

This sounds like a job for…me!

I haven’t  watched a reality TV show (regularly) in years.  They just don’t have the quality options they used to 😉  However, last night I tuned in (by accident) to the show My Diet is Better Than Yours and was immediately sucked in.  You know how I love to give trendy diet fads a test run so that you don’t have to.  This show matches up someone who wants to lose weight with a trainer that walks them through a specific type of diet.  The diets they put to the test are plans that have been around for years but have gained lots of attention over the past few years.

The Contestants and the Trainers

The Diets

The plans range from primal type meals to juice cleanses and everything in between.  I already have a favorite.  I wonder if I’ll change my mind by the end of the series??? Clink on the title of the diet for a link to the full details of each plan.

The Wellness Smackdown Plan

The No Diet Plan

The Superfood Swap Diet

The Clean Momma Plan

The Wild Diet

A certain style of exercise accompanies the diets.  In addition to that the contestants will, of course, have to compete in gimmicky challenges like farmer walking buckets of sugar or being exposed to an exorbitant about of tempting junk food to test their will power.  All goofiness aside, I am interested in following this journey.

Spoiler Alert

After week one, The Wild Diet team had the most dramatic weight loss.  With that being said, I still wouldn’t rank that plan as my favorite.  This primal way of eating doesn’t sit well with me personally over a long period of time.  It’s naturally very low in carbohydrates which can give you a dramatic drop in water weight in the initial weeks.  You eat lots of fats and meats and workout for 7 minutes a day.  I love that you don’t eat any processed or packaged foods and refined sugars are a definite no.  I’m interested to see if he continues to put up the biggest numbers each week.  A popular item on The Wild Diet menu: Butter Coffee Have you tried it?

SCS Coffee

You blend a TBSP or 2 of butter into hot coffee and drink up.

My personal favorite

So far, The Superfood Swap Diet is my favorite.  You learn to eat proper portions.  You allow your appetite to determine when you eat and not a clock.  You can have a treat if you enjoy it with a friend (one of my DOIT rules) and you eat the most nutrient dense foods available.   Honestly, the reason I like this the best is because it is a plan that can easily be followed for life. It allows you to form healthy, reasonable habits that set you up for long term success.

I’ve said to many clients, the plan that works the best is the one that you’ll continue to do forever.

Here is the order in which I rank the plans as of now.  I’ll let you know if it changes:

First: The Superfood Swap Diet

Second: The Wellness Smackdown Plan

Third: The No Diet Plan

Forth: The Wild Diet

Fifth: The Clean Momma Plan

What did you eat today?

Me? Sushi!  Have you tried Fusian?  This is a sushi joint where you can build your own sushi “Chipotle style”.  It’s a great way to load your roll with veggies and seafood while leaving out the heavy sauces.
